We need to distinguish between passion and compassion. Passion is associated with body-mind, while compassion is associated with the mindless inner self. A passionate person is full of desires and hence gripped by unawareness. A compassionate person is rooted in desirelessness and awareness. Passion is the fever of the body-mind, while compassion is the purest form of love expressed through the inner mind. Compassion is a very different form of love, neither dutybound nor psychological. Compassion is not even sympathy or empathy. Compassion is a divine quality of love that manifests from the inner self beyond the material mind. A truly compassionate spiritual master gives without asking. It’s an unconditional quality of sharing without discrimination between a saint, a criminal, or a prostitute, and all are considered equal when sharing by such a master!
